In order to create a 360 degree panorama photos, you do not need to be an expert photographer or own expensive photography equipment. You just need to have a standard SLR camera, tripod and a 360-degree panorama software package and of course a good panorama to shoot. Follow these photography tips for successfully achieving professional results in 360 photography.

First, pick a spot that is equidistant from every point in your photo. You should not have to zoom in and out. Since this panoramic photo will consists of a series of photos taken from one position as the camera is spun in a circle, a tripod is beneficial as it will give more consistent results.

Second, pick a lightly overcast day, to achieve consistent lighting across the entire photo. As a guideline, most outdoor photography techniques require you to take photos between 11 am and 1pm on a sunny day so that shadows will not be cast. If taking pictures indoors, ensure that there is plenty of light within the room with minimal shadow areas. If light within the room is not evenly dispersed, use a flash to fill in the shadows to preserve consistent exposure.

Thirdly, ensure that your camera is affixed to the tripod, which is sitting on a flat surface. To check that you have a level surface, use a Spirit level. A level surface will ensure that there is a consistent shooting angle as you rotate the tripod head. Frame the first shot in the LCD. Use your LCD rather than the optical viewfinder because the LCD will provide a more accurate preview of the photos. This accurate preview can also be achieved with the use of an electronic viewfinder, if your camera has one.

Shoot the first frame, and with the use of the tripod, rotate the camera in a clockwise direction so that the first and second frames overlap by 30 to 50 per cent, otherwise your photos will have lines, distortion or missing portions. Most cameras have a special “Panorama mode” that displays guidelines for overlapping shots on the LCD.

Continue to rotate the camera clockwise in approximately 25-degree increments, overlapping each photo as before. After each rotation, use your Spirit level to check that the camera is horizontal. You can now preview your panoramas on your PC and use your Panorama software to create some unique Panoramic Photography works that will be the envy of everyone!

Stand back: Keep your distance from the people you are photographing. This allows you to remain “invisible” and keeps them from freezing up when they see you taking a photo of them. To do this, use a long-focus lens. This will allow you to focus in on a subject several feet away and get the same shot as if you were standing right beside of them. This type of lens also makes it easy to create the nice effect of blurring the background while keeping your subject in sharp focus.
Move around as little as possible: Before you start shooting, study the area and find a few spots to get shots. Your long-focus lens should allow you to get great photos from a small number of designated places. Doing this will allow you to move around as little as possible, making you even more invisible to other people.
Shoot from the hip (literally): Even if you are keeping your distance, there are still those people who will always notice when a photographer brings a camera up to their eye; causing them to become shy. To lessen the likelihood of this happening, literally shoot from the hip. You may have to try a few times before you get a good shot, but digital photography makes it possible to try as many times as you want. Shooting from the hip also allows you to get shots from a different perspective without having to draw further attention by crouching down.
Never use your flash: Most professional photographers already do this, but it is always important to stress the importance of not using a flash. Shooting with a flash screams, “I’m here, and I’m taking multiple pictures of you!” To make sure you get the best shots without a flash, arrive at the event early and take a few test shots. Make sure you know what the lighting will be like before people start to arrive. This will allow you to set up your aperture, shutter speed and ISO and get a few test shots in without anyone noticing you.
Wear dark colors: Most events are dimly lit, so if you wear a dark color, you will easily fade into the darkness (along with your no-flash camera). Basically, you want to be a wallflower. You want people to never know you were standing ten feet away from them taking photos while they were dancing. Do this by dressing as simply as possible in solid, dark colors.
