Photography is a visual medium and it is mostly about “how” things look in an image, documentary photography is more about “what” you are capturing. Documentary photography is about telling a story in one frame. It’s not about how the makeup is, where the light is and how the colors are. When you are attempting a documentary photography shot make sure that you find something newsworthy to share- something that will tell a story in an image.

When shooting a documentary image gallery, make sure you click photographs in their natural self. Don’t try to put things in a frame for the photograph’s convenience. It’s about capturing events that happen on the normal course of time. Unrelated objects in the same frame make for great documentary photographs. Any image than can speak about current affairs or capture a newsworthy event is a documentary photo- something that documents a happening.

Basic photo editing plays a major role in documentary photography. When you are trying to capture something on the spot, it is hard to frame it right and make it look aesthetically brilliant. You can do that only on the editing table. To correct a frame or make an image look more relevant, crop out the relevant image. Make sure you don’t remove the relevant surroundings from your shot.

It is difficult to capture people’s emotions at the right time which actually make for beautifully relevant documentary shots. The multiple shot feature available in most cameras help in capturing the most intricate expressions. Take multiple shots of people when they react to something- amongst the many frames you will find a face that will speak a million words.

Documentary photography has a lot of impact on how historical events are looked at in the future. Though we don’t remember a lot of events in details, certain images stay in our minds which relate to events. Historic documentary images include Kevin Carter’s image that captured the plight of hungry children in Africa, Hitler’s image hailing himself and more. Most wars are remembered by single images that depict the pain, suffering and outcome. The various images showing the medical conditions suffered by generations because of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombing can’t be forgotten. Various photographs showing the Vietnam war, Iraq war and the two World Wars showcase the pain and suffering thousands went through to bring about peace.

Documentary photography needs a subject and a reason that is more than vanity. To depict events, emotions and stories in a single frame is what it is all about.
