You can also try to look at previous photos that have been taken from those areas where you are planning on diving.

You can definitely gather inspiration from other peoples’ experience, it will also assist you in deciding what kind of equipment will lend to your success.

Consider narrowing your focus to a couple of  subjects and the specific areas of their habitat you want to photograph before going into the water.

When you approach the photography subject make sure to blend into the environment. Keep all movements to a minimum.  Avoid flailing your arms and legs while you swim, be gentle and quiet.

When it comes to underwater macro photography, you have to be aware of presentation and  the moment. Try to imagine what the best possible moment to capture will be.

Try to predict your subjects behavior: will it be slow, or will it escape as fast as it can? Also be spontaneous and take loads of photos, because the moment may slip away.

Composition, strobe position (lighting), background, focus, exposure, and depth of field are six things that you would need to concern yourself with.

When it comes to composition, try to get low, head on, fill the frame, diagonal, or shoot from underneath.

Decide what kind of lighting you want: from the front or the back. Use diffusers that will give your underwater macro photography a soft light. Always focus on the background when shooting, it has a lot to say for your photos.

Do you want it dark, light or something in between? Depending on the subject and how easily your camera is focusing, we recommend you to switch between C (continuous) and S (single-shot) focus modes. Depth of field is all about the background and how blurred you want it.
