Portrait Photography, Photography Tutorial

There are two opposite notions when it comes to taking photos of flowers. The first is that it is extremely easy—all it involves is taking a bouquet, placing it under an adequate light source, and shooting away. The second is that only a professional photographer can pull it off without the photos turning out to be a complete and utter mess. While both of these notions have some truth to them, neither is completely factual.

Flower photography can definitely pose as a challenge at times, but there are some tips you can follow to guide you along the way. Here are a few:

First things first: you do not need an expensive camera. It is possible to take remarkable photos of flowers without the need for a thousand-dollar camera. In fact a two mega-pixel digital camera would work just fine. Having a 30-inch EZcube on hand might be useful. This will help in softening the lighting and eliminating harsh shadows. Using this will also help provide a background that is clean and clutter free.

Many experts in flower photography will tell you that the two most important factors in taking remarkable photos of flowers are focus and diffuse lighting. This means that if you are serious about learning flower photography and learning it well, you ought to take the time to get acquainted with your camera and learn how to set it to ‘spot focus’ mode. The standard setting on most digital cameras is the average focus mode. This means that the camera visualizes an area and fixes its focus purely on what is in front of it. Your goal when taking photos of flowers is to achieve close up photography. This will require the camera to be on spot focus mode. Setting the camera to this mode will allow you to see exactly what the camera will be focusing on.

Now if we’re being honest here, yes, this will require some effort on your part to get the camera to focus properly on the flowers, but this I promise you, the results you will get totally be worth it. Again, as mentioned earlier, proper and adequate lighting is a critical factor in flower photography. If you have tried your hand at taking a few photos of flowers or bouquets, you have probably already discovered that an on-camera flash doesn’t really work well with flower photography. The flash of the camera is often too bright and it is highly likely that it isn’t even positioned correctly to get the flowers to appear the way you want them to in the finished product or photo.

Having said that, I would highly recommend using daylight balanced compact fluorescent bulbs in taking photos of flowers or bouquets. These perform both the job of providing perfectly colored natural light as well as emitting just the right amount of heat. Excessive heat from either artificial or natural light sources isn’t good for the flowers, the camera, or the photographer. You can use an adjustable pair of clamp-on lamps fitted with a daylight balanced compact fluorescent bulb. If for some reason you find it difficult to find this type of fluorescent bulb, a standard 100 watt light bulb will also work. However, you will need to make some adjustments due to the yellowish colour cast it will give off. This is where the EZcube comes in once more. By placing the lights on either side of the EZcube, you are able to eliminate harsh shadows as the light shines through the translucent fabric. The result: evenly lit flowers and gorgeous flower photography.

Remember that it is possible to be serious about photography and to have fun at the same time. Feel free to experiment with the flowers or bouquets while you are taking photos of them. This is one of the best ways to learn. Turn the bouquet and spin the arrangement so you can see which side you like best. Also, make sure that you are placing emphasis on the flowers and not the vase or the pot. This is one common mistake made by amateur flower photographers. This can be corrected by adjusting the camera height and tripod accordingly.

Flower photography also works great with natural sunlight. This is also a more eco-friendly option as you do not need to use any artificial lighting in the process. Just make sure to use a diffuser so as to soften the bright sunlight and reduce the presence of harsh shadows. Remember, don’t forget to have fun!
